천명관의 장편소설 고래는 한마디로 요약하면 “세 여성의 삶이 욕망과 폭력 속에서 끝까지 밀려가는 잔혹한 성장담”이었다.

읽는 내내 과장되고 기괴한 사건이 이어지지만, 이상하게 손을 놓기 어렵다.

이야기의 축 – 노파, 금복, 춘희 (Main Characters – The Old Woman, Geumbok, Chunhee)
소설은 거대한 체구의 춘희가 교도소에서 출소하는 장면으로 시작하지만, 본격적인 서사의 중심은 금복이다. 그리고 그 앞에는 국밥집 노파와 딸 애꾸가 있다.
(The story begins with Chunhee, a woman of enormous size, being released from prison, but the main focus of the narrative is Geumbok, with the old woman from the soup shop and her daughter Aekku appearing earlier in the story.)
- 노파(Old Woman): 박색이라는 이유로 버림받고, 가난과 멸시 속에서 살아남기 위해 폭력을 선택한다. 딸과 돈을 이용하며 세상에 복수하려 하지만, 결국 욕망은 파국으로 돌아온다.
