도서관에서 발견한 정소현 소설집 『너를 닮은 사람』 ― 줄거리, 결말, 감상 (A Short Story Collection by Jeong So-hyeon ― Plot, Ending & Review)

『너를 닮은 사람』은 드라마로도 나온 작품이라는 건 알고 있었다.
(I already knew that Someone Like You had been adapted into a drama.)


드라마는 보지 않은 채 도서관에서 익숙한 제목의 책을 발견했고, 앞부분을 조금 읽어보다가 흥미가 생겨 끝까지 읽게 됐다.
(Without having seen the drama, I came across the book at the library, started reading the first few pages out of curiosity, and ended up finishing it.)

 

생각보다 몰입감 있게 읽혀 금방 완독했고, 다 읽고 나니 드라마도 한번 보고 싶어졌다.
(It was more engaging than I expected — I finished it quickly, and by the end, I found myself wanting to watch the drama adaptation too.)



정소현의 소설집 『너를 닮은 사람』은 2012년 출간된 첫 소설집 『실수하는 인간』을 2021년 재출간한 책이다.
(Jeong So-hyeon's short story collection Someone Like You is a 2021 reissue of her debut collection Humans Who Make Mistakes, originally published in 2012.)


JTBC 드라마 〈너를 닮은 사람〉의 원작 소설을 포함해 총 8편의 단편이 수록되어 있다.
(It includes eight short stories, among them the source story for the JTBC drama of the same name.)

 

젊은작가상, 김준성문학상, 한국일보문학상을 수상한 작가 정소현은 2008년 『문화일보』 신춘문예를 통해 등단했다.
(Jeong So-hyeon, winner of the Young Writers' Award, Kim Jun-seong Literary Award, and Hankook Ilbo Literary Award, made her debut through the Munhwa Ilbo New Year Literary Contest in 2008.)


과거에 붙들린 사람들 (Trapped in the Past)

이 소설집을 읽으며 가장 강하게 떠오른 질문은 '악인은 어떻게 탄생하는가'였다.
(The question that stayed with me throughout this collection was: how does a person become a villain?)

 

소설 속 인물들은 하나같이 과거에 붙들려 있다.
(Every character in these stories is, in some way, held captive by the past.)

 

자신의 근원을 찾아 헤매거나, 지우고 싶은 기억을 무의식중에 외면한다.
(They either search desperately for their origins, or unconsciously look away from memories they wish to erase.)

 

그리고 그 과거의 중심에는 대부분 결핍된 가족이 자리하고 있다.
(And at the center of that past, more often than not, is a family marked by absence and neglect.)

 

아버지는 부재하거나 무책임한 존재로 그려지고, 어머니는 생존을 위해 아이를 돌보기보다 버티는 데 집중한다.
(Fathers are absent or irresponsible; mothers, consumed by survival, have little left to give.)

 

충분한 보호를 받지 못한 아이들은 성장한 뒤에도 과거의 상처와 결핍에서 쉽게 벗어나지 못한다.
(Children who were never properly protected grow into adults who cannot easily escape the wounds of their past.)



표제작 「너를 닮은 사람」 ― 용서가 폭력이 될 때 ("Someone Like You" ― When Forgiveness Becomes Violence)

가난한 유년기를 지나 안정적인 삶을 손에 넣은 '나'가 있다.
(The narrator, "I," has left behind a impoverished childhood and built a stable life.)

 

남편 집안의 재력을 기반으로 한 전원주택, 든든한 남편, 두 아이, 유학파 화가라는 직업까지.
(A country home backed by her husband's family wealth, a reliable husband, two children, and a career as a painter who studied abroad.)

 

겉으로는 부족할 것 없는 삶이다.
(On the surface, there is nothing missing.)

 

그러나 어느 날 잊고 있던 과거의 기억이 '나'를 찾아오면서 이야기가 시작된다.
(But one day, a forgotten memory comes looking for her — and that is where the story begins.)

 

이 작품이 서늘하게 다가오는 이유는 용서를 구하는 행위 자체가 또 다른 폭력처럼 느껴지는 순간들이 있기 때문이다.
(What makes this story unsettling is that the act of seeking forgiveness itself begins to feel like a form of violence.)

 

읽다 보면 피해자와 가해자의 경계가 점점 흐려지고, 이야기가 끝난 뒤에도 질문이 남는다.
(As the story progresses, the line between victim and perpetrator blurs, and the question lingers long after the last page.)

 

과연 누가 피해자였고, 누가 가해자였을까.
(Who, in the end, was the victim — and who was the perpetrator?)


「실수하는 인간」 ― 실수와 고의 사이 ("Humans Who Make Mistakes" ― Between Accident and Intent)

이 소설집에서 가장 강렬하게 기억에 남은 작품 중 하나다.
(This is one of the most intense stories in the collection.)

 

'석원'은 처음에는 어딘가 어수룩하고 미숙한 사람처럼 보인다.
(Seok-won initially comes across as clumsy and unremarkable.)

 

하지만 화분을 망가뜨리고, 아버지를 죽이고, 취객을 위협하고, 결국 자신을 의심하게 된 조력자까지 살해하는 과정을 거치며 점점 더 위험한 인물로 변해간다.
(But through a series of escalating acts — breaking a flowerpot, killing his father, threatening a drunk stranger, and finally murdering the one person who began to suspect him — he transforms into something far more dangerous.)

 

정소현의 담담하고 건조한 문체는 석원이 저지르는 행동마저 평범한 일처럼 보이게 만든다.
(Jeong's calm, dry prose makes even Seok-won's most disturbing actions feel almost ordinary.)

 

바로 그 점이 가장 무섭다.
(That is precisely what makes it so frightening.)

 

무엇이 실수였고 무엇이 고의였는지 점점 구분하기 어려워지고, 태어난 것이 실수라고 여기는 석원의 내면은 「너를 닮은 사람」 속 '나'의 모습과도 묘하게 겹쳐 보인다.
(The boundary between accident and intent dissolves, and Seok-won's belief that his very existence was a mistake echoes the narrator in "Someone Like You" in an unsettling way.)



「폐쇄되는 도시」, 「돌아오다」, 「빛나는 상처」 ― 연대의 가능성 ("The Closing City," "Coming Back," "Shining Wound" ― The Possibility of Connection)

이 세 작품은 앞선 이야기들과는 조금 다른 결을 보여준다.
(These three stories carry a slightly different tone from the rest.)

 

과거로 돌아간 인물들은 기대와 다른 현실을 마주하지만, 자기 부정이나 도피 대신 자신과 비슷하게 버려진 존재들에게 손을 내민다.
(Characters who return to their pasts find reality different from what they had hoped — yet instead of denial or escape, they reach out to others who have been similarly abandoned.)

 

특히 「폐쇄되는 도시」의 '삼'은 폐쇄 직전의 도시에서 정체를 알 수 없는 할머니를 구출한다.
(In "The Closing City," a character named Sam rescues an unidentifiable old woman from a city on the verge of shutdown.)

 

눈을 깜빡일 때마다 모습이 변하는 그 존재는 버려진 사람들과 잊힌 존재들을 상징하는 인물처럼 읽힌다.
(The woman, whose appearance shifts with every blink, reads as a symbol of all those who have been discarded and forgotten.)

 

'삼'은 두려움을 느끼면서도 그 존재와 함께 앞으로 나아간다.
(Sam, despite her fear, walks forward alongside this stranger.)

 

또 「돌아오다」의 마지막 장면, '아무도 쓰다듬어준 적 없는 내 머리를 생각하며 아주 오랫동안 그렇게 매만져주었다'라는 문장은 소설집 전체를 통틀어 가장 따뜻하게 기억에 남는 순간이었다.
(And the final scene of "Coming Back" — "thinking of my own head that no one had ever stroked, I kept gently smoothing her hair for a long, long time" — is the warmest moment in the entire collection.)


마무리 감상 (Final Thoughts

단편집이라 비교적 부담 없이 읽기 시작했는데, 작품마다 난이도와 분위기의 차이가 꽤 있었다.
(I started the collection without much pressure, as it's a short story anthology — but the difficulty and tone varied considerably from story to story.)

 

인물의 심리를 따라가다 보면 어느 순간 선과 악, 피해자와 가해자의 경계가 흐려지는 느낌이 드는데, 그것이 이 소설의 가장 큰 특징처럼 느껴졌다.
(Following each character's psychology, there comes a point where the line between good and evil, victim and perpetrator, simply disappears — and that, I think, is the defining quality of this collection.)

 

서스펜스와 온기가 한 권 안에 함께 담겨 있는 소설집이다.
(This is a collection that holds both suspense and warmth within a single volume.)

 

악인을 단죄하거나 구원하려 하지 않고, 그 추악함과 상처를 있는 그대로 보여주는 방식이 오히려 더 오래 기억에 남는다.
(The author neither condemns nor redeems her characters — she simply places their ugliness and wounds on the page, and somehow that stays with you longer.)

 

드라마를 보지 않고 읽어서 그런지, 책을 덮고 나니 원작이 어떻게 영상으로 옮겨졌는지도 궁금해졌다.
(Perhaps because I read it without having seen the drama, I finished the book curious about how this story was translated to screen.)

 

조만간 드라마도 찾아볼 생각이다.
(I plan to watch the drama soon.)
