최근 교보문고가 진행한 '소설가 50인이 추천한 올해의 소설'에서 김애란 <안녕이라 그랬어>가 1위에 선정됐다는 소식을 접했다
(I recently came across the news that Kim Ae-ran's "Annyeong-ira Geuraesseo" was chosen as No. 1 in Kyobo Book Centre's "Novel of the Year Recommended by 50 Novelists.")
많은 소설가들이 추천한 작품이라는 점이 궁금해 읽게 되었다

홈 파티 (Home Party)
'오대표'의 집에서 열린 홈파티를 통해 계층과 관계의 미묘한 긴장감을 보여주는 작품이다

잘 정돈된 공간과 여유로운 분위기 속에서도 설명하기 어려운 위화감이 흐른다

저렴한 물가를 즐기면서도 그것이 누군가의 낮은 노동 가치 위에서 가능하다는 사실을 깨닫는 순간이 인상적이었다

여행의 설렘과 죄책감이 동시에 공존하는 감정을 담담하게 보여준다

이별 이후의 감정을 몸의 이상 증상으로 표현한 작품이다

끝났다고 생각했던 감정이 몸 어딘가에 남아 있는 것 같은 불편함을 차분하게 그려낸다

레몬케이크 (Lemon Cake)
퇴사 후 책방을 연 주인공은 현실과 가족의 병환을 동시에 마주한다

자연은 누구도 위로하지 않지만, 오히려 그 무심함 속에서 삶을 받아들이게 되는 과정이 인상적이었다

안녕이라 그랬어 (Annyeong-ira Geuraesseo)
표제작은 지방에서 서울로 올라와 삶을 꾸려가던 한 여성이 부모의 간병을 맡으며 겪는 변화를 담고 있다

집이라는 공간이 삶의 기반이면서 동시에 불안의 원인이 되는 현실을 담담하게 그려낸다

희망이 보이지 않는 시간을 버텨야 하는 사람들의 마음이 오래 남았다

신형철 문학평론가는 작품 해설에서 김애란의 소설을 두고 마치 사회학자처럼 우리 사회를 예민하게 관찰한다고 평했다

평범한 사람들의 오늘을 가장 현실적으로 그려낸 김애란의 소설집
(A story collection that portrays the everyday lives of ordinary people with unflinching realism.)
읽는 내내 불편할 만큼 현실적이었지만, 마지막에는 이상하게 위로를 받게 되는 작품이었다
(It was realistic to the point of discomfort the whole way through, but in the end, it left me strangely comforted.)
