<홍학의 자리>와 <유괴의 날>로 국내 스릴러 독자들에게 큰 사랑을 받은 정해연 작가가 첫 번째 소설집 <불빛 없는 밤의 도시>를 출간했다

1. 불빛 없는 밤의 도시 (1. City of Nights Without Light)
표제작의 주인공 재우는 시청 환경과 계장으로 일하지만 시한부 아내의 연명치료비를 감당하기 위해 사채를 쓰고 뒷돈까지 받게 된다
(Jae-woo, the protagonist of the title story, works as a section chief in the city hall's environmental department, but takes out loans from a private lender and even accepts bribes to cover his terminally ill wife's life-support costs.)
평범한 일상을 지키려 했던 선택은 오히려 자신을 더 깊은 수렁으로 몰아넣고, 잘못된 선택 하나가 얼마나 걷잡을 수 없는 결과를 만드는지 보여준다
(The choice he made to protect his ordinary daily life instead drags him into a deeper mire, showing just how uncontrollable the consequences of one wrong choice can become.)
이 작품은 여러 시점과 상황이 빠르게 교차하며 전개되고, 재우의 자기합리화와 끝없이 이어지는 선택이 긴장감을 높인다 마지막에는 정해연 작가 특유의 반전이 기다리고 있으며, 단순한 범죄 스릴러를 넘어 인간 심리를 집요하게 파고드는 작품이었다
(This story unfolds through rapid crosscuts between multiple viewpoints and situations, and Jae-woo's self-justification and endless string of choices heighten the tension. A twist unique to Jeong Hae-yeon awaits at the end, making this a work that digs relentlessly into human psychology, going beyond a simple crime thriller.)
2. 보름 (2. Full Moon)
종국은 생전에 아버지에게 폭언과 폭력을 행사했고, 결국 아버지는 스스로 생을 마감했다
(While his father was alive, Jong-guk subjected him to verbal and physical abuse, and his father eventually ended his own life.)
그 죄책감으로 우울증과 불안장애를 앓던 그는 이미 5년 전에 죽은 아버지가 계속 자신의 눈앞에 나타나는 기이한 경험을 하게 된다
(Suffering from depression and anxiety disorder because of that guilt, he has the strange experience of his father, who died five years earlier, continuing to appear before his eyes.)
어머니를 만나면서 과거에 감춰져 있던 진실이 조금씩 드러나고, 마지막에는 지금까지 믿고 있던 선과 악의 기준이 완전히 뒤집힌다
(As he meets his mother, the truth hidden in the past is gradually revealed, and in the end, the standards of good and evil he had believed in until now are completely overturned.)
호러와 심리 스릴러가 자연스럽게 결합된 작품으로 네 편 가운데 가장 서늘한 분위기를 느낄 수 있었다
(This work naturally combines horror and psychological thriller, and among the four stories, it had the coldest, most chilling atmosphere.)
3. 아름다운 괴물 (3. Beautiful Monster)
쇼닥터 수정은 화려한 삶을 살아가는 듯 보이지만 예상하지 못한 사건에 휘말리면서 이야기는 전혀 다른 방향으로 흘러간다
(Su-jeong, a "show doctor," appears to live a glamorous life, but as she gets caught up in an unexpected incident, the story flows in a completely different direction.)
작품은 시작부터 우발적인 살인 사건을 보여주지만 그것이 무엇을 의미하는지는 쉽게 드러나지 않는다
(The story shows an impulsive murder right from the start, but what it means isn't easily revealed.)
초반과 후반의 이야기가 하나로 연결되는 순간 모든 사건의 의미가 달라지고, 독자가 예상했던 전개 역시 완전히 뒤집힌다
(The moment the early and later parts of the story connect into one, the meaning of every event changes, and the development readers expected is completely overturned as well.)
현실 속 인간의 욕망과 악의를 치밀하게 설계한 작품으로, 제목인 아름다운 괴물이 무엇을 의미하는지 마지막에야 이해하게 된다
(This work meticulously designs real-life human desire and malice, and only at the end do you come to understand what the title, "Beautiful Monster," really means.)
4. 인생, 리셋 (4. Life, Reset)
준구는 수백억 원대 기획부동산 사기 사건의 피의자가 되었지만 실제 돈은 만져보지도 못한 바지사장이다
(Jun-gu becomes a suspect in a real estate fraud case worth tens of billions of won, but he's merely a front man who never actually got his hands on the money.)
벼랑 끝까지 몰린 그는 자신의 인생을 되돌릴 방법을 찾지만, 결국 과거의 잘못된 선택과 욕망은 또 다른 선택을 부른다
(Driven to the edge, he searches for a way to turn his life around, but in the end, his past wrong choices and desires call forth yet another choice.)
주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 현실적인 빌런을 주인공으로 내세워 인간의 이기심과 자기연민을 적나라하게 보여주며, 허무하면서도 강렬한 결말로 마무리된다
(By featuring a realistic villain of the kind commonly seen around us as the protagonist, the story bares human selfishness and self-pity, and closes with an ending that is both futile and intense.)
<불빛 없는 밤의 도시>를 읽고.. (After Reading "City of Nights Without Light"..)
정해연 작가의 작품은 언제나 특별한 악인이 아니라 우리 주변 어디에서나 볼 수 있는 평범한 사람들의 악의를 그려낸다는 점이 가장 큰 매력이다
(The biggest appeal of Jeong Hae-yeon's work is that it always depicts, not some extraordinary villain, but the malice of ordinary people you could find anywhere around you.)
이번 소설집 역시 가족, 직장, 돈, 욕망, 죄책감처럼 현실적인 소재를 바탕으로 이야기를 풀어낸다 그래서 등장인물들의 행동이 낯설기보다 더욱 현실적으로 다가오고, 읽는 내내 '나라면 어떤 선택을 했을까'를 계속 생각하게 된다
(This collection, too, unfolds its stories based on realistic material like family, work, money, desire, and guilt. Because of this, the characters' actions feel less foreign and more realistic, and throughout the read you keep thinking, "What choice would I have made?")
네 편 모두 분량이 길지 않아 부담 없이 읽을 수 있지만 몰입감은 장편 못지않다
(None of the four stories are very long, so they're easy to read without pressure, but their sense of immersion is no less than that of a full novel.)
전개가 빠르고 군더더기가 없어 책장이 술술 넘어가며, 짧은 시간 안에 한 편씩 읽기에도 좋았다 특히 모든 작품이 서로 다른 방식의 반전을 품고 있어 마지막 페이지까지 긴장을 놓기 어려웠다
(The pacing is fast with no wasted material, so the pages turn smoothly, and it was also good for reading one story at a time in a short amount of time. In particular, since every story carries a different kind of twist, it was hard to let go of the tension all the way to the last page.)
<홍학의 자리>를 재미있게 읽었던 독자라면 이번 첫 단편소설집 역시 만족스럽게 읽을 수 있을 것이다
(If you enjoyed reading "The Flamingo's Place," you'll likely find satisfaction in this first short story collection as well.)
인간의 저열한 욕망과 현실적인 악의를 정해연 특유의 날카로운 시선으로 풀어낸 작품집으로, 반전 스릴러를 좋아한다면 추천하고 싶은 소설이었다
