이번에 도서관에서 예약해서 빌린 책은 박연선 작가의 첫 장편소설 〈여름, 어디선가 시체가〉였다.
(The book I reserved and borrowed from the library this time was author Park Yeonsun's first full-length novel, "Summer, A Body Somewhere.")
큰글자도서인 줄 몰랐던 사연 (How I Ended Up With a Large-Print Edition Without Knowing)
예약해 두고 찾으러 갔는데, 큰글자도서라는 걸 알게 됐다.
(I had reserved it, but when I went to pick it up, I realized it was a large-print edition.)
일반판인 줄 알고 빌렸는데 실제로 받아보니 책 크기부터 달랐다.
(I thought I was borrowing the regular edition, but once I actually held it, even the size was different.)
글자가 커서 읽기 편할 줄 알았지만 판형 자체가 커서 손에 들고 읽기에는 생각보다 불편했다.
(I assumed larger text would make it easier to read, but the larger format itself made it surprisingly uncomfortable to hold and read.)
페이지를 넘길 때도 묵직한 느낌이 있었고 오래 들고 읽다 보니 손목도 조금 피곤했다.
(Turning the pages felt heavier than usual, and holding it for a long time left my wrist a little tired.)
다음부터는 도서관에서 예약할 때 일반판인지 큰글자도서인지 꼭 확인해야겠다는 교훈을 얻었다.
(I learned my lesson — from now on, I'll make sure to check whether it's the regular edition or a large-print edition before reserving a library book.)
이야기의 배경 (The Setting of the Story)
이제 책 이야기를 해보자.
(Now, let's talk about the book itself.)
배경은 첩첩산중에 자리한 두왕리, 일명 아홉모랑이 마을이다.
(The setting is Duwang-ri, a village deep in the mountains also known as Ahopmorangi Village.)
서울에서 별다른 목표 없이 지내던 스물한 살 강무순은 할아버지 강두용의 장례식 때문에 오랜만에 고향을 찾는다.
(Kang Musoon, a twenty-one-year-old drifting through life in Seoul without any particular direction, returns to her hometown after a long time for her grandfather Kang Duyong's funeral.)
그런데 장례를 치르던 중 마을 사람들이 하나같이 15년 전 있었던 '네 명의 여자아이 실종 사건'을 입에 올리기 시작한다.
(But during the funeral, the villagers all start bringing up the same thing — the disappearance of four young girls that happened fifteen years earlier.)
처음에는 당연히 '연쇄 납치 사건'이라고 생각했다.
(At first, I naturally assumed it was a "serial kidnapping case.")
제목도 그렇고, 시골 마을을 배경으로 한 미스터리라 네 명의 아이를 한 사람이 죽였을 거라고 예상하며 읽었다.
(Given the title and the rural-village mystery setting, I read on expecting that one person had killed all four children.)
하지만 이야기가 진행될수록 예상은 완전히 빗나간다.
(But as the story progressed, my expectations were completely overturned.)

가장 인상 깊었던 반전은 네 명의 소녀가 모두 같은 사건의 피해자가 아니었다는 점이다.
(The twist that impressed me most was that the four girls were not all victims of the same case.)
처음에는 한날한시에 네 명이 사라졌기 때문에 하나의 거대한 범죄처럼 보인다.
(Because all four vanished on the very same day, it initially looks like one massive crime.)
하지만 진실은 전혀 달랐다.
(But the truth was entirely different.)
네 명은 각각 다른 이유로 사라졌고, 공교롭게도 같은 날 벌어진 일들이 하나의 미스터리처럼 엮여 버린 것이다.
(Each of the four disappeared for a different reason, and by sheer coincidence, events that happened on the same day became tangled together into what looked like a single mystery.)
어떤 아이는 가출이었고, 어떤 아이는 사고였으며, 또 다른 아이는 가족이 숨기고 싶었던 사정 때문에 실종으로 처리됐다.
(One child had run away, another had been in an accident, and another was reported missing because her family wanted to hide the real circumstances.)
독자는 마지막에 가서야 '실종 사건'이라고 믿었던 전제가 처음부터 틀렸다는 사실을 알게 된다.
(It's only at the very end that the reader realizes the premise of a single "disappearance case" was wrong from the start.)
이 반전이 꽤 신선했다.
(This twist felt quite fresh.)
또 하나 흥미로웠던 건 창희라는 인물이었다.
(Another interesting element was a character named Changhee.)
읽는 내내 유독 외모에 대한 묘사가 반복돼서 '왜 이렇게까지 강조하지?'라는 생각이 들었는데, 후반부에 그 이유가 드러난다.
(Throughout the book, his appearance is described repeatedly, making me wonder "why is this being emphasized so much?" — and the reason is revealed in the latter half.)
작가는 초반부터 자연스럽게 복선을 깔아 두고 있었고, 그 복선이 마지막에 회수되는 방식이 꽤 영리했다.
(The author had naturally planted this foreshadowing from the beginning, and the way it paid off at the end was quite clever.)
그래서 결말을 알고 다시 초반을 떠올려 보면 '아, 그래서 그런 묘사가 있었구나.' 하는 장면이 여러 번 보인다.
(So once you know the ending and look back at the early chapters, there are several moments where you think, "ah, that's why that detail was there.")
진짜 재미있는 부분 (What Actually Makes This Book Fun)
사실 이 소설은 범인을 찾는 이야기보다 마을 사람들이 숨기고 있던 비밀을 하나씩 파헤치는 과정이 더 재미있다.
(In fact, this novel is more enjoyable for the process of uncovering the villagers' hidden secrets one by one than for the hunt for a culprit.)
두왕리 사람들은 서로를 오래 알고 지냈기 때문에 진실을 알고도 모른 척하는 경우가 많고, 가족을 지키기 위해 거짓말을 하기도 한다.
(Because the people of Duwang-ri have known each other for so long, they often pretend not to know the truth, and sometimes lie to protect their families.)
독자는 무순과 함께 사람들을 만나며 조금씩 퍼즐을 맞춰 가는데, 한 사람을 의심하면 또 다른 사실이 나오고, 또 다른 사람을 의심하면 예상과 전혀 다른 방향으로 흘러간다.
(Alongside Musoon, the reader gradually pieces the puzzle together while meeting different villagers — suspecting one person reveals another fact, and suspecting someone else sends the story in a completely different direction.)
개인적으로는 범인 자체보다 '사람들의 기억은 얼마나 쉽게 왜곡될 수 있는가'를 보여주는 작품이라는 점이 더 인상 깊었다.
(Personally, what struck me more than the culprit itself was how the novel shows just how easily people's memories can be distorted.)
15년 동안 마을 사람들은 자신이 믿고 싶은 방식으로 사건을 기억했고, 그 기억들이 겹치면서 하나의 거대한 괴담이 만들어졌다.
(For fifteen years, the villagers each remembered the case the way they wanted to believe it, and those overlapping memories created one giant, sprawling legend.)
결국 무서운 것은 귀신도, 연쇄살인범도 아니라 소문과 침묵이었다.
(In the end, what was truly frightening wasn't a ghost or a serial killer — it was rumor and silence.)
전체적인 분위기 (The Overall Tone)
읽기 전에는 무거운 스릴러를 예상했는데, 막상 읽어보니 박연선 작가 특유의 유쾌한 대사 덕분에 분위기가 지나치게 어둡지는 않았다.
(Before reading, I expected a heavy thriller, but thanks to author Park Yeonsun's distinctively witty dialogue, the tone never became too dark.)
개성 강한 마을 주민들의 티키타카와 강무순의 엉뚱한 행동이 중간중간 웃음을 주면서도, 결정적인 순간에는 긴장감을 놓치지 않는다.
(The lively back-and-forth between the strongly individual villagers and Musoon's quirky behavior provide plenty of laughs along the way, while the tension never slackens at the crucial moments.)
드라마 작가 출신이라는 것이 느껴질 만큼 장면 전환도 자연스럽고, 대사만으로도 등장인물의 성격이 선명하게 그려졌다.
(You can really tell the author has a background in TV drama — the scene transitions feel natural, and the characters' personalities come through vividly just from their dialogue.)
다만 마지막 반전에 대해서는 호불호가 갈릴 것 같다.
(That said, I think opinions on the final twist will be divided.)
모든 실종이 하나의 거대한 범죄일 것이라고 기대했던 독자라면 다소 허무하게 느껴질 수도 있다.
(Readers who expected all the disappearances to be part of one massive crime might find it a bit anticlimactic.)
반대로 '결국 가장 무서운 것은 사람이 만든 오해와 침묵'이라는 메시지에 집중한다면 꽤 여운이 남는 결말이었다.
(On the other hand, if you focus on the message that "what's truly frightening is the misunderstanding and silence people create," it's an ending that leaves quite a lingering impression.)
마무리 (Closing Thoughts)
여름에 부담 없이 읽을 수 있는 한국형 코지 미스터리를 찾는다면 한 번쯤 추천하고 싶은 작품이다.
(If you're looking for a Korean-style cozy mystery that's easy to enjoy in the summer, this is a book I'd recommend giving a try.)
웃음과 미스터리, 그리고 사람 냄새 나는 이야기가 적절하게 섞여 있어 페이지가 꽤 많은데도 생각보다 금방 읽혔다.
(With a good balance of humor, mystery, and very human storytelling, it read faster than I expected despite its considerable length.)
